Defenders of Freedom – Anniversary of Operation Bluestar Attacks

June 1, 1984

ON 1st June 1984, as Sant Jarnail Singh ji Khalsa was sitting with his Fauj and Sangat on roof of Guru Ram das Langar around afternoon, bullets started flying over their heads. Singhs ran towards Santji and took him in their security ring. Santji smiled and said ‘Singho, these are just crackers, and I am not going to die with these. I am waiting for the big guns (Tanks, Artillery and helicopter gunships) .They are on the way’! Some singhs took up positions and as they were about to retaliate, Santji stopped them. Khalsa Fauj’s military commander, General Subeg Singh ji had already warned of such an attack as he knew that CRPF and BSF would surely try to instigate Singhs for a counter-attack. If Singhs had opened fire, they would have known the exact positions of defences created by Jhujharoo Singhs. That’s why Santji and General Subeg Singh immediately sent a message to singhs on all the defence posts not to fire in retaliation. Those who were with Santji that day, tell that there was an amazing and electrifying glow in his eyes. He could see the whole area of Darbar Sahib Complex from that place and he was watching it as there was something very great and memorable was going to happen there soon. Santji, despite the adverse conditions, continued the Santhya of Baani wherever he was, be it Langar hall or Akaal Takhat Sahib or his sthaan near Akaal Takhat. A Singh, who went to have Santji’s Darshan that day told me that one Singh was doing Chandi di vaar Paath sitting at a distance from Santji, as Santji was giving him Santhya of Chandi baani that day. Santji was listening to the Paath, meeting Sangat and in between giving Santhya also. As he reached at these lines, a glow, a shine appeared on Santji’s face. Santji asked the Singh to read this pauri 4-5 times. And then he saw towards that Singh and said ‘Singha, today you are reading this, in a few days, you will see this happening’’!
Pauri was:-
Pauri
The war-trumpet sounded and the enthusiasm inspiring drums reverberated.
The javelins and guidons are swinging and lustrous flags are shining.
The drums and kettle-drums produce such a resonance as the roar of a lion.
Durga and demons clashed in the battle and frightful war musical instruments were played in the field.
The warriors were pierced by the spears in such manner as if the myrobalan fruit are clinging to the twig.
Being chopped by the swords, some squirm in a way as if the drunkards are tossing and turning under intoxication.
Some fighters are picked from the bushes just like the gold diggers sift out gold from the sand.
Blows of the mace, trident and spears are inflicted and the arrows are shot swiftly.
As if the ebullient fighters, stung by the black snakes are dying (the arrows sting like snakes). (8)
Santji stayed on roof of Langar Hall for some time and looked at Sri Darbar Sahib from there. After that he came down in Langar hall, took stock of the situation on ground and left for Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib.Firing by CRPF and BSF started at around 12.30 in the noon and continued at regular intervals till 8.00 pm. More that 1200 rounds were fired, out of which around 35 hit Sri Harimandir Sahib. Total of twelve Singhs attained Shaheedi in this firing, out of which 7 were from Sangat who had come for Darshan, 4 were defenders from Damdami Taksal and Bhai Mehnga Singh from Babbar Khalsa. Eleven Singhs had to be cremated quietly by Sangat and Singhs of Jatha as it was very difficult for Santji or other top leaders of Khalsa Fauj to come out in open and perform their last rites.Yes, top Akali leaders including Longowal and Tohra were present at Bhai Mehnga Singh ji’s cremation as Longowal had very good relations with babbars. This has led to a myth that Bhai Mehnga singh ji was the ONLY Shaheed on 1st june or was the first Shaheed whereas truth is there were 12 singhs Shaheed and 25 injured on this day.The instigation plan of Army and CRPF failed badly as they could not find about any of the hidden defenses of the Khalsa fauj(because Singhs didn’t retaliate mindlessly). Singhs were in charhdi kala as usual, reading Baani, doing Naam Simran abhyaas, taking and giving Santhya of Baani, with joy and enthusiasm of Dharam Yudh and Shaheedi in their Hearts and urge to sacrifice this life for Guru and Panth. Tatt Khalsa was ready again under its general Jathedar Baba Jarnail Singh ji to write golden chapter of Sikh history, which was missing in the pages of history since Battle of Chillianwala in 1849. The Lion had woken up!

June 2, 1984 – Hukamnaama of Akaal Takhat Sahib

After the assault of 1st June on Darbar Sahib, Jathedar of Akaal Takhat sahib, Giani Kirpal Singh issued a Hukamnaama for Khalsa Panth from Akaal Takhat on 2nd June 1984. It read:-

‘’Sri Darbar Sahib Amritsar is holiest Sikh shrine and centre. From very beginning Sikhs have given their blood and sacrificed their lives to maintain its sanctity. Baba Deep Singh ji fought with his head on his palm and freed this place from forces and upheld the honour of this Holy Shrine of Sikhs. Bhai mani singh ji got cut to pieces to maintain the purity of Darbar Sahib. Bhai Sukha Singh and Bhai Mehtaab Singh ji punished those who tried to dishonour House of God.
From last many months, Indian government and its forces are trying to destroy Darbar Sahib, Akaal Takhat and Sikh Panth. Yesterday’s brutal attack on Darbar Sahib by CRPF and BSF has left brutality of Mughals far behind. Bullets of CRPF killed dozens of innocent Sikhs, many of them innocent pilgrims and pierced holy walls of Harimandir Sahib. This is the last attack on Sikh Pride, honour and traditions. The unity shown by various Jathebandis active within Darbar Sahib Complex during yesterday’s attack is a great example of Charhdi kala of Sikh Panth. We consider this our supreme duty to aware Khalsa Panth of the arising situation and call upon all Jathebandis and organizations to unite in this hard time. We call upon Khalsa Panth to ‘repel the brutal attack by Army, CRPF and BSF, give them a befitting reply and destroy the Invading enemy forces’’.

Signed
Jathedar Kirpal Singh
Jathedar Akaal Takhat Sahib.
Sri Amritsar 2 June 1984

After this Hukamnaama was issued from Akaal Takhat sahib, it became the foremost duty of every Sikh to unite under call of Akaal Takhat sahib and stand up for honour of Guru, Akaal Takhat Sahib and Sikh Panth. But none of the Akali leaders, who claimed to be sole leaders of Panth, came forward to protect Darbar Sahib. No other Panthic Jathebandi came forward to fight for and defend Akaal Takhat Sahib. No other Sant, Mahapurakh, Samparda, Dal, Jathebandi came forward to fight alongside those handful of Sikh warriors who had pledged to defend Dharam Yudh morcha with all their might, till their last breath, till their last drop of blood. History of Jathedar Baba Gurbaksh Singh ji was being re-created again in 1984. That brave Jathedar,in year 1764, with only 30 Singhs took on 30,000 army of Ahmed Shah Abdali, and here we had Jathedar Baba Jarnail Singh ji Khalsa, who with 350 of his Taksali warriors was readying to take on might of world’s third largest army, whose 100,000 soldiers were going to attack holiest shrine of Sikh panth, to destroy pride and honour of Sikhs, to humiliate Khalsa Panth, under the garb of catching ONE MAN. But that ONE MAN was not a simple human being like most of us would like to believe. He was Baaz of Guru Gobind Singh ji, who had come to wake up sleeping Sikh nation, he was the one sent to make Sikhs aware of their true-self and he was the one who was to show to the whole world what a real Khalsa is like. He was the ONLY ONE who was going to stand up and put into practice Hukamnaama of Akaal Takht Sahib, ‘repel the brutal attack by Army, CRPF and BSF, give them a befitting reply and destroy the Invading enemy forces’’.
